Beginner's Makeup Guide: Lips

Oh how I love lipstick! It adds so much color to your face and it can totally change the look of an outfit. It's a great, easy way to spice things up, and practically foolproof. If you don' like the shade, you can just wipe it off. There are an infinite amount of colors, brands and finishes to explore, so there's always exciting new discoveries to make. Having all those options can be kind of overwhelming at first, so here is a sample of the basic colors I think everyone should have in their collection, and the lipsticks in those colors that I love.

A Nude Pink

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Nude Lust: With nude lipsticks being very popular at the moment, this lipstick is a great color, especially for spring. It's got enough pink to keep you from looking lifeless, while still being muted and "barely there".

A Bright Pink

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Stormy Pink: This is the classic bubblegum pink color. It's a great color when I want a really girly look. This is a very sheer lipstick, which is nice so I can build up the color to the intensity that I want. I can have it barely there or super bold.

A Bright Red

Clinique Lipstick in Matte Crimson: This lipstick goes on like butter, it's super smooth and creamy. It's a very bright color, great for a really bold red lip. It can be classic or wild, depending on what you want it to be.

A Berry Purple

Rimmel Moisture Renew in Crystal Mauve: A berry lipstick is a more unusual color, which is why I like it so much. It's a really fun twist to a classic red. A true purple is a little too weird for me to try in real life, so shades like this are a great way to go out of the box without going way out of the box.

A Subtle Mauve

NYX Butter Lipstick in Root Beer Float: These lipsticks are true to their name, they glide on with the ease and creaminess of butter. So if you like really luxurious feeling lipsticks, this is the brand for you. This color is pretty similar to the previous shade, but instead of being red with purple tones, it's red with brown tones. It's much more understated, a great color for when you want something more than a natural color, but don't want something really bold.

A Soft Brown

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Touchable Taupe: Up until about three weeks ago, I would never, ever have bought a brown lipstick. I thought brown lipsticks would look weird on me. Turns out I was wrong. This is shade is a pretty light brown, and, to my surprise, it works really well on me. I feel like brown lipsticks are great to have in spring, they're so earthy and neutral, and they go really well with the dusty pinks and tans that are all the rage right now.

A Deep Crimson

Rimmel Lipstick in Bordeaux: This is my favorite winter lipstick. It's a great dark red, really maroon tone. This is one of those lipsticks that can be dressed up or down, it looks good with casual or fancier outfits.

So there's my essential colors and the shades I've been loving. Let me know what your favorite lipstick is!
