On Trends and Personal Style

Shirt:Thrift store  Cardigan:Macys  Jeans:Gap  Boots:Modcloth  Choker:ASOS

When chokers became a new trend, I told myself I wasn't going to get involved. I've owned a choker before, a red ribbon with a large red rose glued onto it that I bought from Claire's when I was in 5th or 6th grade. It was a bit too extravagant for everyday elementary school, but I wore it anyway. And I always loved how I looked wearing it. I still think chokers look good, and when I'd see other people wearing them I would think "I could pull that off". But they just seemed so basic, so I avoided getting one for a long time because I didn't want to be one of "those girls".
And then one day I was on ASOS, and I saw this black velvet choker, and I caved. I almost sent it back when I got it, but then I decided I was being silly. I genuinely liked this choker, I had a bunch of outfits I wanted to wear it with, so why shouldn't I keep it?
I think it's important to have a unique personal style. That's one of the reasons I love fashion so much, because it gives me another way to express myself. So it can be hard for me to get into trends, because it feels like I'm going along with the crowd for the sake of fitting in. Or I'm worried other people will think that about me. But I've decided that when a trend comes along that I like, there's no problem with joining in. I don't think it's abandoning my personal style to embrace a part of popular culture that I enjoy. So this black choker is here to stay, at least for awhile.
